The HOKA Bondi franchise has long been a star in the HOKA road running lineup. Now onto its 9th iteration, the Bondi has become emblematic of HOKA's reputation for cushioned, plush (and yes, chunky) running shoes that perform at the highest level.
Bondi's blend of maximal cushioning and smooth MetaRocker has made the Bondi the daily trainer of choice for thousands of runners across the globe, from complete beginners to elite Athletes. But how does the Bondi 9 - launching 15th January 2025 - stack up to its predecessors, and the rest of the HOKA road running range?

The Bondi and Clifton series represent HOKA's bestselling road franchises, and both speak to the everyday runner looking for a reliable, hard-wearing shoe that can see them through their daily training across a range of distances. However, there are a few core differences that are important to be aware of when comparing the Bondi 9 to the Clifton 9.

However, there are a few core differences that are important to be aware of when comparing the Bondi 9 to the Clifton 9.

Whilst the Clifton 9 is all about getting the most from your everyday miles, Bondi 9 offers a more cushioned ride than the Clifton making it a perfect choice for longer or recovery runs, or for runners who tend to underpronate - or even those just looking to mitigate some of the stress that running can put on the body. The Bondi 9 comes in a little heavier than the Clifton 9 due to the added cushioning, and offers a touch more stability for the foot (again making it a good choice for counteracting underpronation/supination). Both styles are available in a wide fit, but the Clifton is the only one that currently comes in a GORE-TEX version if you're looking for something a bit more weatherproof.

In short, if you're looking for a reliable daily trainer that offers a plush, cushioned ride over longer periods of exercise, then the Bondi 9 is a perfect choice. If you have more of a neutral gait and want more of a balance between speed, cushion and stability for different training runs and paces, then the Clifton 9 may be a more suitable fit for you.

Both the Bondi 9 and Mach 6 are stalwarts of the HOKA road training collection, with both available in a wide fit and range of colours. However, where the Bondi 9 leads with its plush cushioning, the Mach 6 is all about delivering a snappy, speedy ride.

The Mach 6 is a great choice for those looking to take their speed training to the next level, and can also be carried through to race day. What the Mach 6 gives away in terms of stability and cushioning on the Bondi 9, it makes up for in lightness and speed. You may struggle to hit your peak speed training in the Bondi 9s, but you'll likely find it a better fit for a longer, even-paced run.

Sharing a name, it's unsurprising that the Bondi 9 and Bondi SR share some common design traits. Both boast the Bondi's iconic chunky styling and maximal cushioning, complete with the trademark wave-motif sole, echoing the waters of the Bondi's namesake Bondi Beach. However, if we look beyond the surface, there are some key differentiating features between these two shoes.

Alongside its trademark Bondi cushioning, the Bondi SR brings a water-resistant leather, slip-resistant outsole and EVA foam midsole to deliver all-day cushion, making it a very popular choice for those looking for a work shoe that can keep them comfortable all day long. The Bondi 9, meanwhile, is decidedly more geared towards running performance. Boasting a premium foam midsole for bounce when running, the sole is shaped to deliver smoother heel-toe transitions, and the breathable upper ensures you don't overheat.

Our two plushest, squishiest shoes are popular choices for cushion fans. Indeed, both the Skyward X and the Bondi 9 answer the call for a cushioned runner; however they do have slightly different end uses, and may play a slightly different role depending on your requirements.

Skyward X has been designed with those all-important recovery runs in mind, so long, even-paced runs. The resilient cushioning and inbuilt suspension system of the Skyward X minimises impact while you run, whilst the convex carbon fibre plate will give each step that little bit of a boost. This makes it a great premium addition to your existing training shoe rotation. The Bondi 9 meanwhile (whilst a great choice for recovery runs also) brings a bit more versatility across different training runs, making it a great choice for those looking for a long-lasting workhorse of a training shoe, or those who just want one shoe that 'does it all'.
